2 out of 5 stars GREAT COFFEE BUT POOR DESIGN   August 28, 2010
William Coleman (Dallas, Texas)
0 out of 2 found this review helpful

Instead of purchasing this coffeemaker through Amazon, my wife spontaneously and unwisely paid full retail price locally, so, we now have an appliance costing in excess of $100.00 and not functioning well. To be fair, this Cuisinart coffeemaker does produce a clean, tasty brew, but that is where my admiration for the machine ends.

First, I have previously owned a combination grinder/coffeemaker and it was nowhere as difficult to use and maintain as this device, so I have a point of comparision. Here is what the consumer will have to endure after purchasing the Cuisinart. (1) an inconveniently located, difficult to read water reservoir. (2) a tempermental bean storage unit that the manufacturer warns you not to overfill. (3) a morning grinding sound that would wake the dead. (4) a port for ground coffee that must be cleaned ever one or two uses. (5) a plastic complex that must also be cleaned after each use. (6) a coffee decanter that is difficult to pour from and impossible to know how much coffee remains after you or your family have drunk a couple of cups.

I would not recommend this product for anyone, except those who just have so much free time on their hands that babying a coffeemaker each day is a treat.

5 out of 5 stars great coffee maker   August 27, 2010
Eric Stearns (Aurora, CO USA)
We bought this coffee maker, mainly because it was highly rated by consumer reports. We weren't disappointed. It makes a great cup of coffee and is well thought out. The carafe pours nicely, so spills are rare.

Some have complained about the small size of the opening for adding water; it is small, but, in several weeks of using it, we've never had a problem.

The lid covering the water tank and filter does accumulate a lot of water...but every coffee maker we've owned has done the same thing; when you have hot water sealed in a chamber, you're going to have condensation. We've never had a problem with this condensation leaking out of the coffee maker.

We highly recommend this item...it's relatively inexpensive, and makes a high quality cup of coffee.

4 out of 5 stars Cuisinart Coffee Maker   August 27, 2010

Shopped around for availability and price and found Amazon won out in both catagories. I am fed up with cheap coffee makers and wanted something with quality and a relative suggested Cuisinart. I purchased the Cuisinart 12 cup with black and stainless decor. I am very pleased with the purchase because it keeps the pot nice and hot and I use less coffee in the basket, which reduces the amount of coffee I buy. The taste of the coffee is the best I have had in a long time. The only negative and it is not a deal breaker by any means, is that when you fill the pot with fresh water it is a little difficult to see the fill line in the unit. I difinately recommend the Cuisinart.

4 out of 5 stars Good overall, but confused on 1-4 Cup feature   August 23, 2010

In general I like this product. It is pretty much what I thought it was going to be, but I have to agree with the weaknessess on pouring water in to the small opening and the condensate dripping down the back.

I am confused regarding the 1-4 cup botton. I actually called Cuisinart customer service for an explanation and they said that this feature makes sure that the first 1-4 cups are as hot as what a full 12 cups would be. I called twice and the second representative actually said that this botton makes sure the water is at the "maximum" temperature.

So, being a bit a tech geek and seeing my BBQ meat temp probe nearby I tried to measure the temp. I found that the 1-4 setting was cooler, by about 5 degrees. Same result in 2 tries. This is not a scientific temp guage, but I am pretty sure of the result as I could feel the difference as it was uncomfortable to hold the probe over the pot brewed without the 1-4 botton and not bad at all to measure the 1-4 cup pot.

I also timed the brew cycle and found that the 1-4 botton took 5 mins and without it 4 mins. This was for 4 cups of water poured in. Are the customer service people missing the boat here and is it really an aroma type botton, not something to make sure the first cups are as hot as a full pot?

Anyone else with this experience? Thanks

5 out of 5 stars Cuisinart Coffee pot   August 23, 2010

I purchased the 12 cup Cuisnart Coffee maker. I do love most features about it except the measurements are not in a window on the outside of the maker but inside the pour area. They are alittle hard to see but not impossible. The pot makes good coffee and beeps to let you know it is ready. I would recommend this coffee maker.

PEX not PECS! Types of Home Plumbing Materials

5 Sep 2010 at 6:28am

OK, let's learn about a type of home plumbing material that is becoming more commonly used called PEX (not "pecs" like on display in the weight lifting photo).

PEX stands for cross-linked high density polyethylene and although the material has been in use since the 1970's, it is now fast becoming the piping material of choice in new home construction and even home remodeling projects.

Although you may find PEX in newer homes, there are many more common types of piping material found in homes depending on their age. For example galvanized pipe is commonly found in older homes and copper pipe is found in homes of all ages and of course still in common use today.

But there are different types of piping used for waste lines, water supply and gas supply. It is important to know which piping material is which and how to identify them so you use the correct material in your home repair projects! I'll also explain what they are used for and how to cut and fasten them together

In the tutorial Types of Home Piping Materials, I will cover the most commonly found piping found in the home such as:

Cast Iron, PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride), Chromed Brass, Chromed Copper, Galvanized Iron, Copper (rigid and flexible), CPVC (Chlorinated Poly Vinyl Chloride), PEX; and Black Iron pipe.

So take a read and learn what type of piping you have in your home.

Planting Trees for Fall Foliage

8 Sep 2010 at 8:01pm

Fall is a visually stunning season and considering the bleakness of winter that follows, there's every reason to make the most of fall color. About's Landscaping Guide, David Beaulieu, gives us an overview of the best trees to plant for fall color, from the sturdiest to the quintessential to the underrated. Fall's color temperatures and frequent rain fall make it the perfect season for planting trees. And many nurseries are slashing prices to move their inventory. So take a look around and if your yard could use a striking accent tree this season, make a choice from David's list. There's a tree for every need.

High on Jacob's Ladder

9 Sep 2010 at 2:27am

I like Jacob's ladder plant most for its foliage. I like to juxtapose it with plants whose leaves have a coarser texture, to achieve contrast. It also doesn't hurt that the most common types of Jacob's ladder have blue flowers, blue being a highly valued color amongst gardeners.

The common name derives from the appearance of Jacob's ladder's leaves: They are compound, composed of numerous opposite, small, narrow leaflets -- like the rungs on a ladder. But "ladder plant" was, presumably, dismissed in favor of a more colorful name. Instead, the most famous ladder in literature was evoked: Jacob's ladder, a vision Jacob saw in a dream as related in Genesis 12-19: "And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven...."

Magic Stud Finder Compact: Half the Size, All the Fun

9 Sep 2010 at 6:47am

Who needs complicated electronics, beeps, and flashing lights when all you need are a handful of rare earth magnets?

That's the premise of the Magic Stud Finder, reviewed here in the past.  These super-strong magnets find and stick to the metal drywall screws or nails embedded below the wall surface.

Drywall is anchored to studs.  Find the anchor, find the stud.  That's the simple idea.

Magic Stud Finder also has a compact version, holding one magnet at a time instead of two.
