5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Play Center   May 23, 2009
Charles R. Oyerly (Vinita, OK)
We bought this sand and water activity center for our great granddaughter a few weeks ago. It's just perfect for the deck, the umbrella is not only functionable but attractive. We chose this one for the reviews we read on ALL the ones out there. Not one bit sorry we got her this one. She is only 15 months old but learned quick to sift her sand, and makes molds to her hearts content. It keeps her entertained for long periods of time.
Problem one: There is no way to keep the sand out of the water nor the water out of the sand side.
Problem two: We could not keep her from pulling herself up on the water side to get the little boats. I found her sitting up in the water side twice...and I was right there with her!!

Solution: We drained the water out of the water side, and filled the whole box with sand. She plays with her cars on the "water" side and the little pots and shovels on the sand side. We also got her a moulded pool where she floats the boats and plays with her bath toys Outside of needing to watch her like a hawk, she has a fun time with her outdoors toys

For those wondering how much sand it takes to fill. We bought one bag of playground sand and still have some left over after filling both sides

3 out of 5 stars The legs fill with water; table leaks   April 19, 2009
Jennifer Hart (East Coast)
I agree with most positive reviews of the table. The table is fun and sturdy and the kids love it. It blends with the natural decor of our yard and deck. The only drawback - and it's a big one - is that IT LEAKS. It will not retain water and even more puzzling is that the legs on the table remain full of water! I don't know how to "drain them" without drilling holes in the plastic. I am in the process of trying to get a replacement table, but I may be out of warranty. I just thought I'd share my experience. I am dissapointed in the leaking, but I can't say that my kids haven't enjoyed the table anyway...

5 out of 5 stars great table, long-lasting   April 14, 2009
PhDMom in Tennessee
I bought this table for my daughter when she was 18 months old, and she is now five and still plays with it. I wanted a sand table rather than a sand box to keep the neighborhood cats out, and this one has a sturdy cover that is easy to remove and replace. The umbrella is still in great condition; we are careful to put it in the sand box before we close it to prevent wear and tear. The table is low enough for a toddler but high enough for 5-year-olds to enjoy too. There is a plug in the water side that makes it easy to empty the water after play. It is big enough for three kids to play at the same time.

There are only two drawbacks: it was difficult to screw in the legs through the plastic; I actually did not do this for some months (and it was sturdy without), but my husband was later able to get the screws in, and that makes it very sturdy indeed. The other drawback is simply the mess of mixing sand and water, and that is simply the result of enthusiastic play. Don't expect the sand to stay in the sand side!

I have recommended this to many friends and am completely satisfied; an excellent product.

5 out of 5 stars Love It!!!!   April 6, 2009

Excellent choice for this 3 year old!! Easy for him to get around and is just the right height. The sand stays off the ground and clean.

5 out of 5 stars High quality   March 21, 2009
Robert Kohr (Morristown, NJ United States)
Very solid simple construction. It took about 3 minutes to put together and I only glanced at the instructions (you should look carefully as there is an important point about the plugs that go on top of the legs).

My son loves it ... and so do I.

What is nice is it blends in well with natural surroundings.

PEX not PECS! Types of Home Plumbing Materials

5 Sep 2010 at 6:28am

OK, let's learn about a type of home plumbing material that is becoming more commonly used called PEX (not "pecs" like on display in the weight lifting photo).

PEX stands for cross-linked high density polyethylene and although the material has been in use since the 1970's, it is now fast becoming the piping material of choice in new home construction and even home remodeling projects.

Although you may find PEX in newer homes, there are many more common types of piping material found in homes depending on their age. For example galvanized pipe is commonly found in older homes and copper pipe is found in homes of all ages and of course still in common use today.

But there are different types of piping used for waste lines, water supply and gas supply. It is important to know which piping material is which and how to identify them so you use the correct material in your home repair projects! I'll also explain what they are used for and how to cut and fasten them together

In the tutorial Types of Home Piping Materials, I will cover the most commonly found piping found in the home such as:

Cast Iron, PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride), Chromed Brass, Chromed Copper, Galvanized Iron, Copper (rigid and flexible), CPVC (Chlorinated Poly Vinyl Chloride), PEX; and Black Iron pipe.

So take a read and learn what type of piping you have in your home.

Planting Trees for Fall Foliage

8 Sep 2010 at 8:01pm

Fall is a visually stunning season and considering the bleakness of winter that follows, there's every reason to make the most of fall color. About's Landscaping Guide, David Beaulieu, gives us an overview of the best trees to plant for fall color, from the sturdiest to the quintessential to the underrated. Fall's color temperatures and frequent rain fall make it the perfect season for planting trees. And many nurseries are slashing prices to move their inventory. So take a look around and if your yard could use a striking accent tree this season, make a choice from David's list. There's a tree for every need.

High on Jacob's Ladder

9 Sep 2010 at 2:27am

I like Jacob's ladder plant most for its foliage. I like to juxtapose it with plants whose leaves have a coarser texture, to achieve contrast. It also doesn't hurt that the most common types of Jacob's ladder have blue flowers, blue being a highly valued color amongst gardeners.

The common name derives from the appearance of Jacob's ladder's leaves: They are compound, composed of numerous opposite, small, narrow leaflets -- like the rungs on a ladder. But "ladder plant" was, presumably, dismissed in favor of a more colorful name. Instead, the most famous ladder in literature was evoked: Jacob's ladder, a vision Jacob saw in a dream as related in Genesis 12-19: "And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven...."

Magic Stud Finder Compact: Half the Size, All the Fun

9 Sep 2010 at 6:47am

Who needs complicated electronics, beeps, and flashing lights when all you need are a handful of rare earth magnets?

That's the premise of the Magic Stud Finder, reviewed here in the past.  These super-strong magnets find and stick to the metal drywall screws or nails embedded below the wall surface.

Drywall is anchored to studs.  Find the anchor, find the stud.  That's the simple idea.

Magic Stud Finder also has a compact version, holding one magnet at a time instead of two.
