If you think your dog has behavioral problems, you'll feel better after watching 10 minutes of Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan's hard-luck cases. The smashing success of Millan's National Geographic Channel series is due partly to that feeling of relief--that no matter how bad your own dog's behavior, by and large, it's not nearly as bad as Millan's clients'; it's kind of like Nanny 911, but with dogs. Millan is also a telegenic, confident animal handler, whose basic message is reinforced in virtually every case: Don't treat your dog like a human; treat him like a dog, and be the alpha dog of your own household/pack. This canine golden rule applies to all kinds of doggie nut jobs: crazy little Chihuahua NuNu, who bites everyone but his owner; big sweetie-pie Great Dane Kane, whose puppy mishap sliding on a slick floor has made him terrified to walk on tile or linoleum; Brooks, who spins in circles trying to re-create a game involving looking for a laser light; and Maya the pitbull mix, who's sweet-tempered enough to let a kitten "nurse" on her nightly, but who tears apart her household a dozen times a day. One of Millan's most amazing success stories in this 26-episode series involves Churchill, a Rottweiler-shepherd mix who's docile and loving at home, but literally tries to attack all other dogs and even bites a neighbor, thus ending up on the brink of doggie death row. But within 15 minutes, Millan's calm confidence, and gentle but firm application of tugs on a well-angled leash have Churchill passing and sitting near a strange dog placidly.

Extras include some outtakes, footage of Millan's beloved wife and kids, and a hilarious "audition" tape, in which owners with their unhinged dogs are telling an off-camera producer why their pet should be considered for the show. All the while, the dogs are pacing, whining, refusing to budge and otherwise providing a lot of unintended amusement. --A.T. Hurley

If you are an animal lover this is a must. I have had a few dogs and they have been great. I always wondered what more I could have done with them and seeing Caesar working with them I wish I only had more time. Even though they were with me most of the time.
I am like he is. Most of the dogs that are put down is for NO reason and I feel the owner like this should have a big taste of there own medicine. Remember you are their ALPHA and they can be an Alpha as long as they comply. Which will make you the pack leader.

It is interesting that Millan's series and his books always say that you should consult a dog trainer before you apply the techniques. He acknowledges that his is not the only way. But they work! I have tried many different methods on my bullheaded Jack Russell, over periods of months, to have little or no effect. Why? Because I was not the Boss, I was the one who showed him how to do tricks (which he did quite well, after pulling my arms out chasing after rabbits). Exercise! Discipline! Affection! in that order! and guess what...exercising the dog first works wonders. And giving him twice daily 2 to 3 mile walks (my husband does one, I do the other) works wonders. Millan's techniques work in conjunction with this. The dog now can watch rabbits take off right underneath his nose, and he is so focused on the walk that he basically ignores them.

I have to say that I see very few people actually giving their hyperactive dogs 45 minutes of exercise. I suppose this goes hand in had with the growing health problems we all have. The best exercise machine, if you are conscientious, is a dog. Get one, follow Millan's caveats, and voila! Healthy owner and healthy happy dog.

Lose the Plumber. Fix Your Garbage Disposal and Save $180

25 Jul 2010 at 10:10am

We love our favorite plumber but only when we really need to call them. Garbage disposals are the kitchen's workhorse but love to quit at the most inopportune times and many times you can repair or replace the disposal yourself.

Hands down, my most popular tutorial is on repairing your garbage disposal. Repairing them can be surprisingly easy and you can do it. I'll show you how make the repairs you need quickly and possibly save $180 or more in a plumbing service call. In this tutorial, I'll walk you through the most common garbage disposal repairs and also tell you how to avoid clogs and slow draining situations.

And get familiar with how the garbage disposal is constructed with Anatomy of a Garbage Disposal for a graphic overview of the disposal's components. And if it's your sink that's causing trouble, see Unclogging a Sink.

Multiplying Onion (Shallot) Recipes Needed STAT!

27 Jul 2010 at 8:01pm

Marlingardener is experiencing a mixed blessing: "My good neighbor gave us a handful of multiplying onions, which I planted and ended up with about a peck basket full. I consider myself a good cook, innovative and creative, but I have no idea what to do with these things.

Please, can someone give me an idea of how to use them, a recipe or two or more, preferably more? The alternative is to set up a target and see who can throw the onions and hit the bull's eye. The prize will be a handful of multiplying onions to plant."

I have to confess, I picked this for Question of the Week because I too have a heapin' helping of shallots in my garden. So help us out here, ">what's you favorite way to use shallots?

And if you don't know what multiplier onions are or how to grow shallots, stay tuned; they are going to be the Featured Plant, on Friday.

August To-Do List for the Yard

29 Jul 2010 at 2:48am

"Your garden is hardier than you think and there are plenty of gardening tasks for August that will keep your flower and vegetable gardens going longer, as well as opportunities to get a head start on next year's garden plans," says Marie Iannotti. As incredible as it may sound, your August yard to-do list, depending on where you live, may include ordering spring bulbs!

I have to admit that I find Marie's August yard to-do list a bit inconvenient. August is the last hurrah for summer in my region, meaning I want to spend as much time at the beach as possible. Soon enough, autumn will be here and I'll be raking leaves!

What's a 10' x 10' Kitchen?

26 Jul 2010 at 5:34pm

If you answered:  a kitchen which is ten feet by ten feet, or 100 square feet, you're only halfway there.

The term 10' x 10' kitchen is often used as a convenient yardstick by cabinet manufacturers to symbolize a certain quantity, sizing, and even quality of kitchen cabinets.  Even though few houses really have 100 square foot kitchens anymore, this 10' x 10' kitchen cabinetry can be applied to bigger floor plans, if desired.

Most notably, this could represent an L-shaped floor plan of 200 square feet, with the 10' x 10' kitchen on one half of the 200 sq. feet and a kitchen table occupying the other half.

It can also be broken up into kitchens of the same size, but different layouts:  galley or corridor-style, or a one-wall layout.

Finally, the 10' x 10' kitchen does tend to represent a kind of contractor-grade set of cabinetry.  For the quoted price--and from what I've seen, they tend to hover around the $4,500 to $7,500 range--you get about 11 or 12 cabinets.
