4 out of 5 stars Seeing Is Believing   September 2, 2010
Sandra (sunny florida)
I bought the 35" W white bookcase. The delivery was fast. It is quite a sturdy peice. I like the idea that I can use it in the office, bedroom, kitchen or living area. Very versatile. When I feel like changing my decor, which I do quite regularly, I probably will paint this to match my room.I might even use it in my closet to put my shoes on, much too nice of a peice to just put in closet though. Don't be afraid, it's a great quality bookcase for the $. Love You Amazon.com! Sandra from Florida

4 out of 5 stars Honey Oak is more of a cherry...but overall fantastic   August 29, 2010

I love the fact that you literally unfold the bookcase right out of the box... no assembly required. Fantastic. It is good wood, put together well, and the finish is smooth and even throughout. The only thing is that the color Honey Oak looks more like a cherry than the oak in the picture... but that is okay for my needs.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Size   August 17, 2010

I was looking for a book shelf that would fit perfectly in a spot I needed to store books, nic-nacs, etc. and this was just what I was hoping to find. It's very good quality. Not a cheap piece that most stores sell. The only thing was the color was more of a cherry, but it ended up matching another cabinet I have in this room.
Love it and would recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Solid value and style for the money   June 3, 2010

Mission style bookcase (14") was perfect fit for a tight spot. Solid wood, well made, opens with no assembly (just glue in screw plugs on side). Useful piece. Have two - one in natural one in mahagony. Recommend the optional mantle top, adds a nice finish toit and another shelf/top. Would recommend this piece for all aspects.

I got the Honey Oak (mantle & bookcase). What a pleasure to just take this out of the box without anything to put together. It's very well made, and I just love the color. I'm thinking of purchasing another one now for my office (and I probably will). I have no reservations in recommending this to anyone.

PEX not PECS! Types of Home Plumbing Materials

5 Sep 2010 at 6:28am

OK, let's learn about a type of home plumbing material that is becoming more commonly used called PEX (not "pecs" like on display in the weight lifting photo).

PEX stands for cross-linked high density polyethylene and although the material has been in use since the 1970's, it is now fast becoming the piping material of choice in new home construction and even home remodeling projects.

Although you may find PEX in newer homes, there are many more common types of piping material found in homes depending on their age. For example galvanized pipe is commonly found in older homes and copper pipe is found in homes of all ages and of course still in common use today.

But there are different types of piping used for waste lines, water supply and gas supply. It is important to know which piping material is which and how to identify them so you use the correct material in your home repair projects! I'll also explain what they are used for and how to cut and fasten them together

In the tutorial Types of Home Piping Materials, I will cover the most commonly found piping found in the home such as:

Cast Iron, PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride), Chromed Brass, Chromed Copper, Galvanized Iron, Copper (rigid and flexible), CPVC (Chlorinated Poly Vinyl Chloride), PEX; and Black Iron pipe.

So take a read and learn what type of piping you have in your home.

Planting Trees for Fall Foliage

8 Sep 2010 at 8:01pm

Fall is a visually stunning season and considering the bleakness of winter that follows, there's every reason to make the most of fall color. About's Landscaping Guide, David Beaulieu, gives us an overview of the best trees to plant for fall color, from the sturdiest to the quintessential to the underrated. Fall's color temperatures and frequent rain fall make it the perfect season for planting trees. And many nurseries are slashing prices to move their inventory. So take a look around and if your yard could use a striking accent tree this season, make a choice from David's list. There's a tree for every need.

High on Jacob's Ladder

9 Sep 2010 at 2:27am

I like Jacob's ladder plant most for its foliage. I like to juxtapose it with plants whose leaves have a coarser texture, to achieve contrast. It also doesn't hurt that the most common types of Jacob's ladder have blue flowers, blue being a highly valued color amongst gardeners.

The common name derives from the appearance of Jacob's ladder's leaves: They are compound, composed of numerous opposite, small, narrow leaflets -- like the rungs on a ladder. But "ladder plant" was, presumably, dismissed in favor of a more colorful name. Instead, the most famous ladder in literature was evoked: Jacob's ladder, a vision Jacob saw in a dream as related in Genesis 12-19: "And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven...."

Magic Stud Finder Compact: Half the Size, All the Fun

9 Sep 2010 at 6:47am

Who needs complicated electronics, beeps, and flashing lights when all you need are a handful of rare earth magnets?

That's the premise of the Magic Stud Finder, reviewed here in the past.  These super-strong magnets find and stick to the metal drywall screws or nails embedded below the wall surface.

Drywall is anchored to studs.  Find the anchor, find the stud.  That's the simple idea.

Magic Stud Finder also has a compact version, holding one magnet at a time instead of two.
