4 out of 5 stars Not too bad   February 4, 2010

I just received the playhouse and set it up that afternoon. Be forewarned, like everyone else said, it can take a few hours to assemble. Generally speaking, assembly should have been easy -- the instructions are clear enough, but man, those plastic pieces don't always play well with each other. There are a ton of screws, arm yourself with a drill or powered screwdriver (and maybe a backup battery). The slide and rock wall were an absolute nightmare to attach. I finally got the slide to attach after a lot of kicking, screaming and hitting with a rubber mallet. Ultimately, I think my tears lubricated the pieces to allow them to join. I'm going to try to tackle the climbing portion this weekend. It's just difficult to gain leverage because the unit itself is very light (it's plastic after all) and incredibly bulky.

It's too early to say how durable this will be. I'm in Arizona and I imagine that when the summer hits, this thing will probably melt or warp, who knows!? For now though, it seems very sturdy and I'd have no problem letting my daughter abuse it. The toy phone is pretty cheap and lightweight, but she seemed to like it -- the countdown has begun though to see how long before it's lost in the backyard.

I love the little lamp on the outside of the house and the table and chairs seem like they'll be great for her to enjoy with friends.

One final note, when you do assemble the house, remember that the wall with the slide portion attached DOES swivel open -- you don't have to worry about getting trapped in the house during assembly -- yes, I had a brain fart and wasn't paying enough attention to realize that for the 10 seconds I sat to catch my breath and plan an escape. It was late at night when I was finishing up after a long day at work, cut me some slack.

4 out of 5 stars A good outdoor toy   September 9, 2009

I bought this toy for my two year old son. My idea was to give him something to play with on our small backyard.

My overall rating is "good by not great". Playing in the house is definitely fun for him and his friends (ages 2 to 4). The house is lightweight but looks quite durable. So, it is a "good" purchase (also considering the price).

However, I must give several words of caution for those thinking of purchasing it.

1. My son's physical development is typical for a two-year-old boy. Yet, he is almost able to climb to the roof of the house or to lean over a red horizontal bar (which would be extremely dangerous). So, he has to be closely supervised while being there. This may not be what you expect from a toy for small children.

2. Many reviewers complained about a house assembly. I find instructions clear enough. However, the assembly did require two adult men, and physical force at some stages. Overall the assembly took couple of hours.

3. The house is somewhat dull inside (gray plastic walls without decoration). It could have easily been made more jolly by "Little Tikes".

My 20 month old daughter loves it!The slide was a litttle challenging to get in place (stomp on it, it'll go in#, instructions were pretty good. It looks great and it's like having two things. I do not have the climb-up step installed properly but it works. My daughter loves to talk on the telephone #which I did not know was included). I would recommend this toy.

I bought this playhouse for my grandson's second birthday...he loves it! He calls it "his house".

5 out of 5 stars Fun, fun, fun!   April 7, 2009

My 2 year old son absolutly loves this house. My father in law had to come snap it together, but besides that it has been a great toy to have on our back deck. Everyday my little man looks forward to going down the slide and going in and out of his door, and sitting at his picnic table. I would highly recommend this to parents with young children.

Lose the Plumber. Fix Your Garbage Disposal and Save $180

25 Jul 2010 at 10:10am

We love our favorite plumber but only when we really need to call them. Garbage disposals are the kitchen's workhorse but love to quit at the most inopportune times and many times you can repair or replace the disposal yourself.

Hands down, my most popular tutorial is on repairing your garbage disposal. Repairing them can be surprisingly easy and you can do it. I'll show you how make the repairs you need quickly and possibly save $180 or more in a plumbing service call. In this tutorial, I'll walk you through the most common garbage disposal repairs and also tell you how to avoid clogs and slow draining situations.

And get familiar with how the garbage disposal is constructed with Anatomy of a Garbage Disposal for a graphic overview of the disposal's components. And if it's your sink that's causing trouble, see Unclogging a Sink.

Multiplying Onion (Shallot) Recipes Needed STAT!

27 Jul 2010 at 8:01pm

Marlingardener is experiencing a mixed blessing: "My good neighbor gave us a handful of multiplying onions, which I planted and ended up with about a peck basket full. I consider myself a good cook, innovative and creative, but I have no idea what to do with these things.

Please, can someone give me an idea of how to use them, a recipe or two or more, preferably more? The alternative is to set up a target and see who can throw the onions and hit the bull's eye. The prize will be a handful of multiplying onions to plant."

I have to confess, I picked this for Question of the Week because I too have a heapin' helping of shallots in my garden. So help us out here, ">what's you favorite way to use shallots?

And if you don't know what multiplier onions are or how to grow shallots, stay tuned; they are going to be the Featured Plant, on Friday.

August To-Do List for the Yard

29 Jul 2010 at 2:48am

"Your garden is hardier than you think and there are plenty of gardening tasks for August that will keep your flower and vegetable gardens going longer, as well as opportunities to get a head start on next year's garden plans," says Marie Iannotti. As incredible as it may sound, your August yard to-do list, depending on where you live, may include ordering spring bulbs!

I have to admit that I find Marie's August yard to-do list a bit inconvenient. August is the last hurrah for summer in my region, meaning I want to spend as much time at the beach as possible. Soon enough, autumn will be here and I'll be raking leaves!

What's a 10' x 10' Kitchen?

26 Jul 2010 at 5:34pm

If you answered:  a kitchen which is ten feet by ten feet, or 100 square feet, you're only halfway there.

The term 10' x 10' kitchen is often used as a convenient yardstick by cabinet manufacturers to symbolize a certain quantity, sizing, and even quality of kitchen cabinets.  Even though few houses really have 100 square foot kitchens anymore, this 10' x 10' kitchen cabinetry can be applied to bigger floor plans, if desired.

Most notably, this could represent an L-shaped floor plan of 200 square feet, with the 10' x 10' kitchen on one half of the 200 sq. feet and a kitchen table occupying the other half.

It can also be broken up into kitchens of the same size, but different layouts:  galley or corridor-style, or a one-wall layout.

Finally, the 10' x 10' kitchen does tend to represent a kind of contractor-grade set of cabinetry.  For the quoted price--and from what I've seen, they tend to hover around the $4,500 to $7,500 range--you get about 11 or 12 cabinets.
